Video games for the visually impaired
Over the years, the phrases video games and computer games have become synonymous, with visuals being an integral part of gaming. The importance of visuals within the world of gaming, however, has the symptom of excluding millions of individuals from a pastime so prominent in modern society. Blind Arcade aims to break new ground in digital game accessibility to create a visually inclusive gaming environment.
This game utilizes motion tracking, spatial audio, and haptic feedback interactions to communicate with the player.
Using motion tracking to control the character allows the user to know the state of their digital character through proprioception - the internal sense of the position and movement of your body parts.Â
The player can sense the directions of sounds through the inclusion of spatial audio - playing sounds at differing pitches, volumes, and directions. The implementation of the doppler effect allows the user to hear the relative movements of objects.
Vibrations and clicks on the mobile device helps to notify the player when something impactful happens (defeating an enemy, landing on the ground, countdowns, etc.).
